I’m having a lot of problems with some of the plugins and the new version of WordPress, and it is making updating the site a bit of a hassle. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is disabling the blog/forum username cross-compatibility. Since I know we got a few new users registering for comments recently, but no new comments, is also linked to that issue. I’ll hopefully hammer it out within the night. Thanks for sticking with us.

Things should be working smoothly now. I did some layout updating as well to fix some issues that kind of nagged me. Forum link has moved to the right side. Commenters can use an OpenID to login again, so you’re able to use that if you have it available. Apparently we’re still having issues with IE and some links, but I’m on it.

Hey everyone, I’m glad to see there are people still clinging to our vestigial RSS feed. We had some big plans earlier in the summer, but a lot of things kind of fell flat between both of us taking summer classes and working. That said, we’re going to be picking things up a bit around here, and following this week’s release of the final piece of Fallout 3 DLC, I will be dropping an update for the F3CP within the week. Big props to the various people who have contacted me through this site and in the Giant Bomb community who have been sending me bugs and errors with the sheet. I think you will all enjoy the latest version. We’ll write some stuff soon, don’t worry.

It seems like forever since I’ve written a post. I’ve been working on bits and pieces of some reviews and articles, but the real thing keeping me away from posting, aside from schoolwork, is a lot of work on the backend of this site to launch some forums. After a couple days of yelling at my server and the scripting, I’ve finally integrated everything. You can register for the forums, and use the same forum registration to post comments on the blog posts. One login to rule them all. However, the only downside of this is that it breaks the OpenID functionality that I originally had in place, so the OpenID users will have to re-register. That’s really a moot point though since I’m really looking forward to bringing people into the community! So without further ado:

So, previously, I abandoned reviews because of my tendancy to be overly subjective. However, now I’ve decided to use a new review system that will let subjectivity in, but still retain a bit of a “score”. On top of that, I wanted the reviews to be short. So, with all that in mind, I came up with a system for reviewing, and I’m calling it the Five Thumbs scale.

Every game will be rated on five different points. These don’t have to be graphics, or audio or anything in particular, but the five most important points of the game. These are the things that made you want to play the game or put it in a shoebox. Each of these points will be assigned a thumb, and a brief description of why it earned that thumb.

The Green Thumbs Up
Everyone knows that green means go, and if you see this next to a point, that means that it is one of the things that the game did right. The obvious connection to make here is that the more green thumbs a game earns, the better the reviewer thought the aspects of the game were.

The Yellow Middle Thumb
The things that make you go “meh” earn themselves a yellow thumb. Worth mentioning, but neither in the red or green thumb category. Yellow is generally par for the course, and does nothing that stands out positively or negatively.

The Red Thumbs Down
Red and thumbs down are both negatively connotative symbols, and so the combination of the two generally spells out bad things. This is where the game flopped or floundered, and was just an all around let down. Racking up the red thumbs earns the game a spot in the garbage bin.

Expect the new review system to debut tomorrow, with more from myself and some friends of mine to follow! Now, I just have to worry about weaseling in time to play games as the second half of the semester falls upon me.

Also, currently removed the post ratings because it decided to stop functioning. When I figure it out again, I’ll bring it back.

Welcome to the all new design of Perpetually Gaming! Not only is it a new look, but it is a new server and new infrastructure. I’m moving away from the idea of a one-man blog, and instead moving towards new community related aspects, multiple authors, and more frequent content. No longer will this site have the view of one man from a Communication Studies perspective. Instead of posting news like everyone else, we’re going to bring you our own personal takes on what’s going on in the world of gaming.

As far as community features go, you can create an account, or use an OpenID account you already have, to comment. All posts and all comments can now be rated, so you know where all the good stuff is. All articles have buttons for popular social networking sites at the bottom, so it is easy to share content with your friends. You can also now follow the site on Twitter as well as an RSS reader. Plans are in the works for more ideas as well!

Any old links and RSS feeds you have will still work, so no bookmarks need to be updated (although you may need to clear your cache to see the new favicon). Expect minor aesthetic changes to occur during the initial weeks as I tinker around with options and colors, but for the most part, this is the new design and new direction of Perpetually Gaming, and I’m glad to have you aboard!

I decided to spend a few minutes leisurely photoshopping a new header for the blog, and some minor tweaks here and there. Other than that, I just spent a few days out of town with no gaming contact aside from Chrono Trigger, which has some thoughts brewing in my mind, so in between a final, a paper, and a presentation all before Thursday, I’ may sneak in a post on that. I’m also interested in this month’s Blogs of the Round Table discussion, so I may throw my hat in the ring there. Following the end of the semester, I’ll actually start discussing that paper I wrote earlier this semester about videogames, and maybe my thoughts on the 2008 VGA winners.

Here I am, on the precipice of something new. A step in the direction towards the rest of my life. This is where it all comes together, and everything begins to mean something.

On that somewhat life-affirming (or at least blog-affirming) line, I would like to welcome you to this little project that I’ve decided to undertake. Here’s the short version of what is going on here: My name is Bryan and I have a B.A. in Speech Communication from Wayne State University. I am currently a student in the MA in Communication Studies program at WSU. I’ve always been interested in the way that people interact with each other (partially the reason I find myself hopelessly fixated on Lost). Along with that, I also enjoy spending my time on the internet and playing video games.

I’m hoping by now, you’re beginning to see what I’m hinting towards. If you guessed that I am interested in studying interpersonal communication through internet technologies and video games, I’d dare say that you hit the nail on the head. The world of game culture is a fledgling field, by academic standards, and as our technologies advance, so will our world of gaming. While I’m only in my first semester of my program, I have decided to begin building my body of work and my social network on the topic through a blog.

I’ll also interject with my ideas on games, books, and the various facets that make up the culture of gaming. On top of all that, I’m open to expanding this blog to other writers with similar goals as well, so if you are interested and qualified, please do not hesitate to contact me.

What’s important, however, is that I’m putting my thoughts on this subject on to the internet for others to react to. There’s no better way to expand your horizons than through intelligent discussion between people with similar ideas. Please, always feel free to chime in.

Thanks in advance,
Bryan
