Paul is excited for someone to win!
So, I have some codes for Beatles tracks on Sgt. Pepper’s and Abbey Road, but instead of redeeming them, I bought the full albums and decided to give the codes away here! All you need to do to is register for the forums and start, or join, a discussion! (Real posts please!) Forum link is on the right hand side of the page. This contest will run until Saturday, and a winner will be chosen Sunday night. We’ve got another contest in the works too! Maybe we’ll write an article or something too!
This weekend I am going to be doing a presentation as part of a panel at the Michigan Association of Speech Communication conference. Our presentation is titled “Old School vs. New School: Communication Practices in a Texting / Hip-Hop / Gaming / Social Networking Culture”. My portion of the presentation is titled “Level Up: How Games and Gaming Culture Change Communication”. Both are little long winded, I know, but you know how us academics are. I’m currently trying to find someone to film it so that I can get it up on to the site. There’s also another presentation regarding gaming later in the day, and I’m going to contact that presenter to see if I can record that to post as well. They are 45-minute sessions, but in the case of our panel, I am only speaking on the subject for 10 minutes. Regardless, I’ll try to have something to post, despite the fact that I will get nervous and probably trip over my words.

When that first footage of Ubisoft’s Jade Raymond playing one of the first demos of the original Assassin’s Creed came out, I was immediately interested. In fact, it’s the game that convinced me to buy an Xbox 360. The game had some really interesting mechanics like the passive and active modes of the face buttons for combat, take downs, and just plain old walking around, some free running elements that felt really good, as well as some new takes on stealth. But not all of the elements of the original Assassin’s Creed were as compelling or polished.
While Assassin’s Creed was touted as an open world experience, and while that was fairly true the game tended to swing wildly between heavy-handedly guiding you through a situation and giving no direction at all. The main assassination target missions were fun, but the extremely repetitive nature of sub missions it took to get there were excruciating, and when you finally were able to take out a major target, the game backed off a bit too much. I found myself struggling with taking out a target in any badass manor. All too often I had to take out guards to get to the target, and by the time I reached him he was long gone. Most of the time I killed these main targets by being persistent and chasing after them and then killing them when I finally caught up. I’m having a lot of problems with some of the plugins and the new version of WordPress, and it is making updating the site a bit of a hassle. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is disabling the blog/forum username cross-compatibility. Since I know we got a few new users registering for comments recently, but no new comments, is also linked to that issue. I’ll hopefully hammer it out within the night. Thanks for sticking with us.
Things should be working smoothly now. I did some layout updating as well to fix some issues that kind of nagged me. Forum link has moved to the right side. Commenters can use an OpenID to login again, so you’re able to use that if you have it available. Apparently we’re still having issues with IE and some links, but I’m on it.

Paul does not need a fur coat with that beard
I have been surrounded by music lovers my entire life. My father gave me my first guitar, and my uncle, who lives across the street, hung his classic LPs across the walls of his basement. I’ve always had an appreciation for good classic rock because of them. It’s because of them I was at my local Best Buy this morning standing in line for The Beatles: Rock Band. I was always familiar with the band through my younger years, but as I grew, so did my fondness for them, and my appreciation for what they’ve done for music. So I’ll profess my fanboy status upfront, and let you know this review is heavily biased. However, I think that in this day and age, it is more strange to not be influenced by The Beatles in the realm of music, as their short career produced the most appreciated catalog of music that the world has ever seen. So, after I returned home from Best Buy this morning, I stood there with my faux Gretsch guitar, and played through the entire story in one sitting, played some more, went to class, then called over some friends and played some more. After taking in everything the game has to offer, here’s what I came away with.

 Ha! More like "The CHOKER."
Go back through the annals of gaming history and I’m sure you’ll find a long standing trend in which games created from licensed properties have generally not been well accepted or well made. So the first murmurs about Batman: Arkham Asylum didn’t inspire too much excitement in me. But as its release grew nearer footage of the game seemed to portray an interesting story, innovative gameplay, and polished graphics. And now that I’ve played the game I think it’s safe to say that my view on licensed video game titles has been drastically changed as this iteration of Batman lore has broken the mold and provided all of the elements you saw in pre-release footage.

Hey everyone, I’m glad to see there are people still clinging to our vestigial RSS feed. We had some big plans earlier in the summer, but a lot of things kind of fell flat between both of us taking summer classes and working. That said, we’re going to be picking things up a bit around here, and following this week’s release of the final piece of Fallout 3 DLC, I will be dropping an update for the F3CP within the week. Big props to the various people who have contacted me through this site and in the Giant Bomb community who have been sending me bugs and errors with the sheet. I think you will all enjoy the latest version. We’ll write some stuff soon, don’t worry.

 Red Faction: Guerrilla
We’ve been meaning to write more around here, but as we’ve both been taking summer classes and working, those opportunities are fewer. Hell, for me, even opportunities to play games are limited to late night sessions that I usually regret as I wake up the next morning to head in to work. So, to offset this fact, my gaming time has really been limited to games that I have good, old-fashioned fun with. Most of that comes in my group sessions of Rock Band or Scene It, however, when flying solo, I’ve been taking to Red Faction: Guerrilla.
I got the game from GameFly a couple days after its release earlier this month, and I have not sent it back yet (this was much to Sean’s chagrin, as he had been waiting for them to send him a copy until last week). The game, which I have described to my friends as “GTA on Mars”, places you in the role of Alex Mason, whose brother was just killed by the Earth Defense Force, the governing body of the Martian colonies, and you’ve taken to the Red Faction to get your revenge. The Red Faction is a group of miners and workers who aim to overthrow the martial law of the EDF – giving that word red in the title a new meaning when you realize the socialist undertones of the game. If game characters had their own personal ad section on Craigslist, I can imagine that as of the past few years a lot of the postings would sound a little like this:

LOOKING FOR A LITTLE ACTION? – m4w – 28
Some people call me a mercenary, but I’d like to think I’m just a nice guy with a wild streak. I’m into firearms and explosives but I can never get enough ammo I like riding in and hanging from a lot of different types of vehicles (just to spice things up). I’ve been described as a packrat and I’ll admit to that. I just like collecting odds and ends I find throughout the world.
I’m about 6 feet tall and weigh about 175 lbs. I’m a white guy with short hair and dreamy blue eyes. I usually wear a hoodie or a coat and I have a gruff voice. Sometimes I try to be stealthy, but I’ve found that tactic to be less effective lately. I always seem to attract attention wherever I go. Oh, and people say that I look best from behind and at a slight angle. Like what you hear?
Send me a message! No pics, no response.

New carnival game! Shoot the mutants to win a prize!
I know we haven’t posted around here in a while, but Sean and I are both taking summer classes. Ironically, we’re both taking classes on New Media (such as this thing you’re reading now). I’ve got another breif post on communication in games, giving it a bit of an academic spin, but allow me to digress for a moment here. You want to talk about communication in games? Co-op, that’s where communication in games is at.
You know what the most fun I’ve had playing a co-op game recently is? A light gun style game, House of the Dead: Overkill on the Wii, placing you and possibly a friend in the shoes of Agent G and Isaac Washington. I remember days in my youth playing light gun games at the arcade near our cottage in northern Michigan, and I loved them then. My friends and I have been making a point to sink in plenty of time in HotD before and after LOST the past few weeks. It invokes the light gun feeling better than any other game I’ve played at home since Duck Hunt, and the story is hilarious. It’s extremely fun, and when you turn on the Extra Mutants mode to double or triple the numbers of enemies on-screen, you have to really communicate with your partner to make sure you’re not going to get mauled.
